THE MUMMY MOT

®

What is a Mummy MOT?

The Mummy MOT is a thorough post natal assessment by a women's health physio specialist.  It is designed to support post-birth recovery and to help prevent any long-term childbirth-related complaints.  It will also prepare your body for another pregnancy.

The Mummy MOT comprises detailed post-natal rehabilitation treatment for every new mother, whether it is your first baby or your third, or more.  It's an ideal procedure any time from 6 weeks postpartum for women who have had a vaginal delivery, or 8 weeks after a Caesarian.

It can be of great benefit at any other time after a woman has given birth, even if it's many years later.  Whether you have had a vaginal birth or a C-section, the Mummy MOT will help you to recover from giving birth and to rebuild your body and achieve any postpartum health and fitness goals you have.

In a detailed examination, a specially-trained women's physiotherapist will assess your posture and breathing as well as the strength and function of your abdominal muscles and pelvic floor muscles to ensure that healing is progressing as it should.  Your womens physio will also assess any episiotomy, tear or C-section scar that you may have.

Your physiotherapist will then recommend interventions needed to speed up your recovery and to deal with any discomfort or pain you might still be experiencing.

What Happens at a Mummy MOT?

You can expect your Mummy MOT appointment to be 90 minutes' duration.  There will be a comprehensive examination conducted by a specially trained post natal physio women's health practitioner.  She will conduct an in-depth assessment of all matters relating to your pregnancy and childbirth experience.  Your posture and pelvic floor muscles will checked for postnatal problems, and your abdominal muscles will be assessed for diastasis so that appropriate treatment can be recommended, such as strengthening exercises.  Any scarring will be examined, such as from a C-section or tearing.  You will also be given an ultrasound scan if necessary.

The Mummy MOT includes an internal pelvic examination, and you will need to remove the bottom part of your clothing for this element.  If you're uncomfortable about this part of the assessment, it isn't mandatory.  However, it's highly recommended so that your pelvic physiotherapist can fully understand your problems and your needs to make the best recommendations for you.

If you are experiencing any discomfort or pain as a result of pregnancy and childbirth, your therapist will recommend interventions such as exercises and other treatment methods to help manage your symptoms and get you back to your full fitness.
